For years the Mercyhurst music majors and faculty had wished for an intimate performance space built especially to showcase the talents of individual artists and small student ensembles. So when plans for the Audrey Hirt Academic Center were drawn up in 2001, they included a recital hall with its entrance just inside the main doors of the building.
On October 27, 2002, Dr. Barrett Walker and his wife Catherine were on hand with their family for the formal dedication of a beautiful and intimate recital hall that bears their name. The Walker Recital Hall has a 1,200 square-foot stage and features stadium seating and a Steinway grand piano.
The recital hall was opened nearly two months after the Hirt Academic Center because construction of the interior of the hall was halted so more manpower could be dedicated to preparing the Hirt classrooms in time for the start of classes in September 2002.
Today the hall is used for small lectures, recitals, and intimate jazz and world music performances.
